Before becoming Amity and later Woodbridge, CT (1784), our community provided refuge to the "Regicides," three of the judges who signed the death warrant for King Charles I of England. Though farming on the Flats of the West River Valley established Woodbridge, our community has been a center for suburban development for New Haven.
Our community is known for its contribution to history as the place where the sulfur match was invented. Several National Register of Historic Places, such as the Darling House Museum, the Dr. Andrew Castle House, the New England Cement Company Kiln and Quarry, the Woodbridge Green Historic District, and the Chatfield Farmstead.
Until zoning changes were accepted in the fall of 2021, Woodbridge only allowed single-family housing, which makes up 99.8% of all housing in our community. Our community also puts a great deal of effort into preserving nature and the environment thanks to the efforts of the Woodbridge Land Trust and the Woodbridge Park Association, responsible for developing and maintaining the 93-acre Alice Newton Street Memorial Park and the 22-acre Wepawaug Falls area, which feature numerous well-maintained hiking trails.
