Can Sunburn Make Tinnitus Worse?

Tinnitus is a condition millions of American people know too well; it’s that persistent ringing, buzzing, or whistling in your ears that no one else can hear.

While numerous factors can trigger or worsen tinnitus, have you ever considered whether a day under the sun, resulting in sunburn, could influence its intensity? It’s a question we get from many (sunburned) patients in the summertime, citing concerns about their tinnitus getting worse.

What Is Tinnitus?

Imagine a constant soundtrack in your ears that only you can hear. That’s tinnitus – a condition where individuals perceive phantom sounds without any external source. These sounds range from ringing and buzzing to hissing and roaring.

Tinnitus isn’t a disease in and of itself but a symptom of other underlying issues, such as:

  • Hearing Loss: Often a result of aging or prolonged exposure to loud noises.
  • Loud Noise Exposure: Work environments or leisure activities that expose you to high decibel levels can lead to noise-induced hearing loss and tinnitus.
  • Earwax Buildup: Excessive wax can block ear canals, leading to tinnitus.
  • Medications: Some drugs list tinnitus as a side effect, including certain antibiotics and cancer medications.

While tinnitus alone isn’t harmful, it can significantly affect your life, leading to sleep disturbances, concentration challenges, and emotional distress.

How Sunburn and Sun Exposure May Affect Tinnitus

The idea that sunburn might worsen tinnitus is a surprising connection for many individuals, but with the connection in mind, the causes and effects make more sense than people would think.

Inflammation:

When you experience severe sunburn, your body undergoes widespread inflammation as it tries to heal the damaged skin. This inflammation isn’t confined to your skin alone; it can affect other parts of your body, including the inner ears, where it may worsen tinnitus symptoms. Inflammation can interfere with the delicate processes inside your ears, potentially heightening the tinnitus experience.

Physical Stress:

The pain and discomfort from severe sunburn adds another layer of physical stress, which can increase the feeling of tinnitus, making the sounds seem louder or more intrusive.

Dehydration:

Dehydration can decrease blood flow to vital areas, including the inner ear. Staying hydrated in warm weather is not only crucial for overall health but also particularly important for anyone dealing with tinnitus.

Heat Exhaustion or Fatigue:

Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to heat exhaustion or general fatigue. During these periods, your body’s resources are stretched to maintain essential functions, which may elevate existing tinnitus symptoms and make them feel more pronounced.

When to Seek Help for Tinnitus

Knowing when to see a professional about tinnitus is crucial for effective management.

  • Persisting Symptoms: If your tinnitus becomes a constant companion, lasting beyond a few weeks without any signs of improvement, it’s time for an evaluation.
  • Worsening Post-Sun Exposure: Have you noticed your tinnitus ramping up significantly after basking in the sun? If so, this change calls for a consultation.
  • Interference with Daily Life: When tinnitus starts affecting your ability to perform regular tasks, disrupts your sleep, or alters your mood, it’s a signal to seek professional advice.
  • Accompanying Symptoms: Should tinnitus arrive with new hearing difficulties, ear pain, or dizzy spells, it’s imperative to speak with an audiologist.
