Unfortunately, most hearing losses are gradual. It's not something that happens suddenly, unless it's related to injury.

As a result of gradual hearing loss, the auditory brain also gradually adapts and accommodates to this slow declining hearing loss. It therefore becomes difficult for a person to really perceive that they are in fact losing hearing which is why those around you, such as family and friends are usually the first to notice it rather than you. An important factor to realize is “if you don’t hear something, you don’t know you did not hear it.”

In spite of this, there are some general symptoms related to hearing loss, which I cover below.

Look Out For These Signs Of Hearing Loss

  1. The first sign of hearing loss is when you don’t always hear what someone has said, or your loved one will say, “I had to say it a couple of times before you heard me.”

  2. When you listen to the television, the volume is turned up too high. The volume that you set all the different audio-related devices at is a little bit higher than others would set it to.

  3. You have to ask for something to be repeated a few times.

  4. You might experience ringing in the ear, something that we refer to as tinnitus, where there is some form of a sound in your ears/head in the absence of external sounds.

  5. And the most important symptom is what I refer to as “The mumbling effect”; “I am perfect but all people are just not speaking clearly”. Which basically means “it is them and not me”.

All of these could be symptoms of some changes that take place in your hearing mechanism.

When people experience these kinds of issues, they should really do something about it, because delaying or ignoring treatment can worsen the consequences of their hearing loss. We recommend you start the healthy hearing process with a hearing test.

A hearing test is quick and non-invasive and you’ll get the results immediately after taking it. After the hearing test, we’ll present you with some treatment options which are based on what we find from your test; Taking into consideration your needs and lifestyle, various options will be discussed for your consideration. We also consider cognition and auditory processing skills in our final recommendations.

To schedule your hearing test with us, or to find out more about hearing loss testing, you can contact us by filling out our online form call us at (475) 227-0842.
